Gascoigne Associates Cleans up at ‘Red’ New Zealand Retail Design Awards
Jun 28th
Gascoigne Associates continued its winning streak at the Red Awards, announced at the annual awards function held at Auckland’s Maritime Museum on Saturday, 25th June. Gascoigne took away seven out of the total of 18 awards categories, bringing their awards haul for the last three years to 23. They also took out three of the Group Awards in this year’s competition against stern competition from the biggest number of entries in the award’s history – over 140 entries.
As New Zealand’s most awarded retail architects and retail transformation consultants, Gascoigne has just over 25 years in business and just around the corner is their 2000th project milestone. Mark Gascoigne, Principal and Architect, is delighted that 2011 has provided more achievements for the company.
“It is fantastic to get this recognition for my team. This has been a very tough year for retailers and they’ve been wanting every dollar spent on design to generate sales growth. We’re pleased to have had clients prepared to undertake some very brave initiatives – which have paid off – and these awards acknowledge that,” said Mark Gascoigne. More >

The Parrot AR Drone Enters Christchurch Cathederal
Jun 20th
In March PBPR was pleased to work with Yoobee to launch the Parrot AR Drone in conjunction with the release of iPad2.
The AR Drone is an amazing piece of equipment that on the one hand can be used as a game or entertainment, but as this footage shows, has amazing possibilities for business.
Powered by four fan engines and directed by an iPhone or iPad, the AR Drone can hover and fly in all directions. Cameras on the AR Drone show where you’re going and transmits the images back to the driver. Amazing.
In this 3 News item, see as the AR Drone enters the Christchurch Cathedral and gives us a sobering look at the inside and the damage. See here for the footage. Thanks to 3 News.

Christchurch Artist’s Tribute to his Cherished City
Jun 14th
Celebrating the beauty of Christchurch in all its former glory is the focus of a new tribute exhibition by local Christchurch artist, Paul Hanrahan. Having just finished a collection of delightful watercolours of the city that lives on its resident’s memories, he will be exhibiting this new work at the Jonathan Grant Galleries opening on Thursday16th June, to help raise money for the Christchurch Earthquake Fund.
Inspired by a series of sketches the artist did in his youth around the city, the watercolours are lively and capture the places, spaces and architecture of Christchurch, which have been forever changed in the wake of the February 22nd earthquake. A key aspect of his work is the inclusion of people which bring his paintings energy and life. The residents of Christchurch are captured shopping at Cashel Street Mall, discovering the delights of the Arts Centre markets and visiting the cities iconic landmarks, including the Christchurch Cathedral.
“These early drawings inspired me to record in watercolour the city I love, and at the same time I reminisced on hearing the crunch of autumn leaves underfoot whilst walking in Hagley Park, passing enthusiasts with their gleaming model yachts on the Victoria Lake whilst smelling the aroma of breads wafting from the Arts Centre bakery” says Hanrahan. “If these paintings can revive the fond emotions and memories that others and I have for the Christchurch that I remember, then I will feel that I have done something”.
This wonderful tribute to Christchurch will be on at Jonathan Grant Gallery, 280 Parnell Rd, Parnell, Opening June 16th, exhibition from June 17th to July 12th 2011. More >
New Credit Card Surcharging Service Comes at a Cost – But Not for the Merchant
Jun 14th
The electronic payments sector is due for a shakeup with the launch of a new service for merchants that puts EFTPOS terminal rental costs firmly where they should be – onto the consumer. Using clever thinking, smart software and a supportive bank, new company Integrated Payments Limited (iPayments) has created a service that automatically surcharges consumers for credit transactions – the first such service in New Zealand.
The result is a rent-free EFTPOS terminal for the merchant, with credit card surcharge fees not only paying for the terminal, but once a threshold is reached, actually returning additional profits to the merchant.
iPayments was formed last month by members of the Ryan family, Paul and Peter Ryan, founders of EFTPOS Helpdesk Limited. They have more than 20 years of electronic transaction experience behind them. This month they were joined by Australian My ATM Holdings (ASX: MYA) through its wholly-owned subsidiary MY EFTPOS Limited acquiring 30% of Integrated Payments Limited.

Farewell to a Remarkable Woman: Branka Simunovich
Jun 8th
Branka Simunovich, one of this country’s real characters and beauty entrepreneurs has left us.
She died suddenly on the weekend and so many in the industry and the realm that she created are shocked and saddened that she has gone – too early and too suddenly for us all.
She was a client and a friend and we will miss her greatly. We wish her family the warmest heart felt condolences.
We at PBPR wanted to acknowledge her and her legacy.
Branka was a maverick. Croation by birth, Branka arrived in New Zealand with her husband and two daughters in 1993, leaving her homeland, the city of Salona on the Adriatic Sea, determined to build a better future for her family.
And she did – although her husband returned home only a month after arrival, Branka stayed.
She had a dream – to create cosmetics from olive oil, using the recipes that her grandmother taught her. And a decade later, with the help of her second husband Ivan, she began to live that dream.
Together they first built New Zealand’s largest olive estate in the Bombay Hills, South of Auckland. They installed New Zealand’s largest olive press and proceeded to win a series of top national and international awards for quality and flavour. More >
