With a final rattle of the shakers and finishing flourishes, the Bar Masters winner has been decided. Impressing the judges with their creativity and flair in an exciting live final, it was ultimately Hannah Waters from Mea Culpa who had the edge and took out the title with a clever cocktail titled ‘Je Ne C’est Quoi’ – French for ‘I Don’t Know What’.

“Hannah’s cocktail showed originality, imagination and a splash of brilliance” says Tomas Vikario, Bar Masters MC and special guest from Monin. “I was very impressed with the amazing cocktails made by the final four competitors, it is always fascinating to see the inventive way they use Monin ingredients”.

Claiming the Bar Masters 2011 title, Hannah takes away a fantastic prize from sponsor MONIN, a trip to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The trip will give her the opportunity to see the top bars in the area and the fascinating MONIN factory.

“Judging the final four was one of the toughest jobs I’ve ever had” says Head Judge and editor of Hospitality/Thirst magazine Don Kavanagh. “The competition really went down to the wire and separating the top two was an agonising decision for all three judges. Some of the drinks presented – under pressure – were simply exquisite and the creativity and imagination was amazing”.

“The standard of bartending skills on offer was excellent and the New Zealand hospitality industry should be proud of all the contestants. They all have great futures and the future of bartending in this country is in great hands”.

The Restaurant and Bar Show also wrapped up yesterday with crowds of hospitality insiders gleaning plenty of interesting information about the upcoming busy season from the event over a busy three days.

Highlights included the Telecom Masterclasses by South African veteran restaurateur Pete Goffe-Wood, during which he imparted the insights gained from his experiences at the FIFA World Cup. The ‘Match Ready Seminars’ were also well received with local and international industry leaders speaking including: Justin North, Dheeraj Bhatia, Luke Dallow, Keith Stewart, John Clarke and Leon Grice, the Director of NZ2011 Office.

Celebrating the best of what the hospitality industry has to offer, The Restaurant and Bar Show and Bar Masters is officially over for 2011, but has been an inspiring and educational experience for the industry. Giving them plenty to think about and do for the hectic season soon to be upon us.

You can almost hear the rattle of shakers already, as New Zealand’s most exciting bartending talent prepare to wow the judges at this year’s Bar Masters. After several fast and furious rounds of voting, with 100 of New Zealand’s top Bartenders in the running, the final 12 have been chosen to battle it out for the 2011 Bar Masters title. Sponsored by MONIN and run as part of the Restaurant and Bar Show, this exciting event will take place on Monday July 18th and Tuesday July 19th, held in Auckland at the ASB Showgrounds.

Thousands of votes were cast and an esteemed panel of judges made the final decisions on the top 12 from all over New Zealand. ”I’m really looking forward to the competition,” says head judge Don Kavanagh (Editor of Hospitality/Thirst). “The quality of the people who have been entered is top-notch and it will be interesting to see sort of concoctions they can come up with to wow the judges.

“The competition is a great way to recognise those bartenders who strive to consistently raise the standards of the industry,” says Kavanagh.

Gascoigne Associates continued its winning streak at the Red Awards, announced at the annual awards function held at Auckland’s Maritime Museum on Saturday, 25th June. Gascoigne took away seven out of the total of 18 awards categories, bringing their awards haul for the last three years to 23. They also took out three of the Group Awards in this year’s competition against stern competition from the biggest number of entries in the award’s history – over 140 entries.

As New Zealand’s most awarded retail architects and retail transformation consultants, Gascoigne has just over 25 years in business and just around the corner is their 2000th project milestone. Mark Gascoigne, Principal and Architect, is delighted that 2011 has provided more achievements for the company.

“It is fantastic to get this recognition for my team. This has been a very tough year for retailers and they’ve been wanting every dollar spent on design to generate sales growth. We’re pleased to have had clients prepared to undertake some very brave initiatives – which have paid off – and these awards acknowledge that,” said Mark Gascoigne.

Gascoigne’s big winners on the night included Glassons’ Newmarket Flagship Store, which took the coveted and keenly contested ‘Apparel’ Award along with the overall Group Award in the ‘Personal Category’. In addition it scooped the sponsor’s Flooring Award.

The judges of the Red Awards had nothing but praise for Glassons.

“The international standards in fashion retail design have not only been met, but exceeded with this design and the innovation and attention to detail across so many areas is already apparent and has resulted in an uplifting brand experience.”

Also noted by the judges was the Gascoigne designed Cocoro Restaurant which took out both the Restaurant and Bar Category along with the overall Group Award for the ‘Nourishment Category’ and to top it off, a sponsor award for best shop front.

“We felt Cocoro’s design complimented the buildings architectural features exceptionally well to create contempory, relaxed spaces. The shop front is an impressive introduction to the experience inside – reflecting a consistency with the design and clever execution of the brand elements.”

Rounding out the awards bag was Telecom’s Victoria St Concept Store jointly designed and entered by Gascoigne Associates and Designworks. The judges commented that the Telecom Concept Store significantly pushed the boundaries of traditional retail experiences, particularly in the tele-communication category. And that the designers have created a fun space that allows consumers to engage with new technology in a way that they are comfortable and in control.
